The recognition of Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence comes as a surpise to me (and most other Russia analysts) because it seems not to have any added value for Russia. Russia already had the regions under control, both are totally dependent on Moscow and Russia's could not have been accused of violating international law. ... Russian foreign minister Lavrov has made clear yesterday, that Russia will not accept Georgian or even EU peacekeepers in South Ossetia. Besides, Moscow insists that the security situation in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia can not be seperated from addressing the future legal status of these regions.

Der Bericht der russländischen Izvestija über angebliche Pläne russländische strategische Bomber auf Kuba hat erneut für Irritationen über die russländische Sicherheitspolitik ausgelöst. Viele Kommentatoren habendie Ereignise während der Kubakrise 1962 in Erinnerung gerufen. Der von Izvestija nicht genannte Informant hatte auf die technischen Möglichkeiten der Nutzung Kubas für die strategischen Bomber hingewiesen. Daraus wird zunächst nicht klar, ob damit die Errichtung  eines Luftwaffenstützpunktes auf Kuba oder die Nutzung von Einrichtungen auf Kuba für mögliche Wiederbetankungen der Bomber gemeint ist.
